Touchstone Text: This is a Jewish text relevant to the program. It can be the inspiration for the program or provide background information for the program.
Goals: Explain what you want your program to accomplish and what you want participants to learn. (these usually start with the word “to”)
Ex) To help program participants become awesome programmers
Objectives: This is a quick overview of what will happen in your program and how your goals will be accomplished.
Ex) Participants will be able to write a program using the program format sheet
Materials: List all of the things that you need for this program.
I find it helpful to break this into three sections:
Materials: Be sure to remember EVERYTHING (even little things like pencils or paper).
People: Be sure to include everyone who will help run your program.
Space: Be sure to write all the rooms and locations you will need for your program.
Timeline: This breaks up the different parts of the program. Make sure to include time for group transitions and location changes. Be careful not to “waste” or schedule too much time. It is hard to fill dead time, but be sure to allot enough time for each activity so that groups are not rushed.
Ex) 0-1 min – introduce program format sheet
1-5 min – read through the format sheet
6-10 min – answer any questions
11-12 min – transition into …
Procedure: This is where you write down the entire program and how everything will happen.
- Start with the location where the program will begin, and if there are stations, include where each group leader should wait.
- If the participants will break into separate groups, include where each group with go and with whom.
- Describe in detail how your program will play out. Include EVERY step.
- If there are rotations, explain where each rotation will travel.
- If your group leaders need to introduce an activity, be sure they have plenty of background information; you may even want to provide text for them to read. Just remember, it is better to be too specific than to have a confused group leader.
- If you have any articles, worksheet, or additional information to include, reference by saying something like (see appendix A) and attach them to the format sheet
- Remember to include discussion and wrap-up questions to guide group leaders.
NOTE: Be sure that your group leaders have read through and are familiar with the program. A program is only as good as its leaders!
