NFTY-NAR TYGs

NFTY’s heart and soul is the local Union for Reform Judaism affiliated synagogue Temple Youth Group (TYG). While each local TYG differs in organization, focus, size, and character, the Temple Youth Group is the outlet for the highly engaged Reform Jewish teenager in a Union Synagogue. While some TYGs only meet 5 times a year for social programs, other TYG’s meet over 20 times each school year and offer a full variety of social, leadership, educational, and social action programs.

TYG Name: MUTSY

Stands for: Made Up Temple Senior Youth

Temple Info: Made Up Temple, Nowheresville, NY

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: [this example is much longer than is necessary]

MUTSY was created in 1906 when Made Up Temple’s high schoolers decided it’d be really cool to hang out together and be able to tell the future kids of NFTY-NAR (their great-grand children) all about our TYG in this nifty webpage. MUTSY includes boys and girls in 9th-12th grade, but we also spend time with our JYG, MUTJY. We have about 13 members and are proud to say that one of them has ventured out of made-up land to the real world. We often hold shul-ins, hang out nights, and trips called “MUTSY on the Town.” We also see each other every Thursday night at Hebrew school. Our mascot is named “MB,” short for “Make Believe,” and stays in our youth director, Sally’s office. Ever since 1985 we’ve had an annual sock-hop on February 29th. We are also holding a clothing drive for children in need. We don’t exist!

Long Island TYG's

TYG Name: CHATY

Stands for: Chaverim Temple Youth

Temple Info: Chaverim Temple, Plainview NY

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: Once upon a time, there were some Reform Jews

The first CHATY member saw LIFTY when it was putting out its pews

We range from grades nine through twelve-is

We've been known to spend our free time dancing to Elvis

We go to the city to have good dinners

When you are with CHATY, you are always a winner

After having a tie for a tzedakah choice,

we needed our caterer to provide an extra voice

When we chose Little Shelter, dogs barked with glee

as they heard CHATY would help to alleviate their flees.

Apples to apples is our preferred game

If you refuse to play with us you are really lame

CHATY, as we are the chattiest of chatters can be, but in the end we are nothing but mad hatters.

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: J.tel covers teens from eight grade through their senior year in high school. J.tel is essentially Hebrew High School and Youth Group in one lovely two-hour package. Each night, we are graced by two fantastic Rabbis who do "Ten Minutes of Torah" on the topic that will be discussed that evening. We have about 30 registered members, and about 25+ come on a weekly basis. We also love NFTY-NAR in a big way.

TYG Name: ONESY

Stands for: Temple Am Echad (ONE) Senior Youth (Hebrew: echad=one); formerly TELY and SALTY

Temple Info: Temple Am Echad: South Shore Reform Congregation (Lynbrook, NY); formerly Temple Emanu-El of Lynbrook and Temple Sinai of Lawrence

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: ONESY is the senior youth group at Temple Am Echad, the brand new product of a merger between Temple Emanu-El of Lynbrook (TELY) and Temple Sinai of Lawrence (SALTY). We are named after our favorite type of pajamas, and of course, our name is also symbolic of the “one people” and “one-ness” which we strive to become/achieve. ONESY is specifically for high school students, but beginning in the late-winter to early-spring we invite our eighth graders to events to give them a taste of what’s to come. Our younger sides, Junior Youth Group (JYG: grades 6-8) and Am Echad South Shore Kids (AESH, which means “fire” in Hebrew: grades 4-5), are an important part of who we are as we often attend and help coordinate their fun events. We are currently home to about fifteen wonderful members! We meet every Wednesday night, with approximately one or two Board Meetings per month and the rest of our nights filled with programs, intelligent discussions, and oodles of laughs! Every year, we host two Shul-Ins and rock out at a major, congregation wide ruach service. In addition, we lead Youth High Holiday Services, coordinate a huge food fundraiser called Halloween for the Hungry, and throw a DJ produced dance party. We also have various other events that change year to year. Some examples of these are leading Havdallah at Temple programming, participating in social action projects like our recent work with the Haiti Relief Fund, Coffee Houses, nights “out on the town,” trips, and much more. We love NFTY and we love NAR and all of our friends there. We care deeply about others, Israel, and our planet. Our favorite games are Table Tennis and Foosball (which are conveniently located in our youth lounge), laser-tag, and Apples-to-Apples. Currently, we are sending around our social action bear, Una, to TYGs across NAR. Please take pictures with her as you do tikkun olam and pass her along! (Ask us if you’d like her to be delivered to you, next!) Also, please contact us if you are interested in doing joint youth group events and anything else along those lines as we love to get together and have fun with other TYG’s!

TYG Name: TISBY

Stands for: Temple Isaiah of Stony Brook Youth

Temple Info: Temple Isaiah, Stony Brook, NY

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: TISBY was created a long time ago by a person who is likely in their fortys now. We arent entirely sure who this person is, we just know that they are existant. TISBY's seniors include teens from 9th-12th grade, and also has two divisions of junior youth groups, with the Junior division(grades 5-7) and the Inter division(grades 7-8). We have approxamately 15 to 20 members of the senior youth group, and we are proud of our close-ness. Aside from meeting on Sunday nights from 5-7 pm weekly, we run events at our temple such as the Latke Bash, Purim Carnival, and end-of-the-year barbecue. We usually refer to our mascot as a Tiger, but we have too many interesting characters in our TYG that we just cant pick only one! We exist, we promise.

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: BHGSY is a senior youth group and we currently have members in grades 9th through 12th. We do not have a JYG but at the end of every year we invite 8th graders to our annual Coney Island event in order to introduce them the BHGSY. BHGSY does many social action projects throughout the year. During the High Holidays we help with our synagogues food drive, on Purim we deliver Mshloach Manot to homebound members of our community, we cook and sleep at our synagogue’s homeless shelter and currently we are running a toiletry drive for the HUC soup kitchen. We have monthly events that range from our annual bowling trip to programs about social action and holidays. We would love to have other members of NAR attend our events.

TYG Name: TaSTY

Stands for: Temple Shaaray Tefila Youth

Temple Info: Shaaray Tefila, Located on 79th and 2nd, New York, NY,

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: Rumored to be the first TYG in the history of the world (still unproven), TaSTY sports an eclectic group of high school students from all over New York City. TaSTY is one of the largest youth groups in NAR and definitely one of the most unique. Our members can do everything from cooking to juggling. Our traditions date back to ancient times, including kidnapping eighth graders in order to recruit them to join (don’t worry, they are warned before hand, and are given plenty of bagels and schmear), and progressive dinners. Once a month TaSTYites gather around the fire and discuss upcoming events and then discuss our homeland in the media, films, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In short, TaSTY is dank.

TYG Name: JiFTY

Stands for: Jewish Family Temple Youth

Temple Info: Jewish Family Congregation, South Salem, NY

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: Our TYG is for 8th-12th graders that are part of our temple. As many people continue to graduate, we don’t have a ton of members but we have a solid 10-15 members. We are currently working on a social action cause—helping to save the planet—by collecting garbage that can be reused and donating it to Terracycle, which is a cool organization.

TYG Name: TIFTY

Stands for: Temple Israel Federation of Temple Youth

Temple Info: Temple Israel of New Rochelle, New Rochelle NY

“Meet My TYG” Personal Info: Temple Israel Federation of Temple Youth is founded in a long history of dedication to excellence in youth involvement and activity. Beginning in the early 1960s, TIFTY was originally called Junior Society.  TIFTY has now flourished to be perhaps the most active group within the Temple Israel greater community with over 40 members in grades 9-12. TIFTY is a social action oriented youth group; we hold monthly Sandwich Brigades where we donate sandwiches to the local soup kitchen.   If there’s no TIFTY event that week, we still get to see each other at regular Tuesday night Hebrew school.   Overall TIFTY is very involved http://tifty.tinr.org/

TYG Name: TISY

Stands for: Temple Israel Senior Youth

Temple Info: Temple Israel, Westport CT

TYG Personal Info: With our TYG slogan being “Get Busy With TISY,” TISY certainly exudes magnetic vibes wherever we may go. Even though TISY remains exclusively for boys and girls in grades 9-12, we have 3 JYGs (Junior Youth Groups) at our synagogue: KATANTY23 for grades 2-3, KATANTY45 for grades 4-5, and MITY for grades 6-8. TISY’s two biggest events of the year are Saturday Night Live, a fun mystery bus tour that usually occurs every January, and TISY’s Retreat, which is a fun weekend spent with TISY that usually occurs in late February or Early March annually. Both of these major TISY events are open to 8th graders. We frequent NFTY events as well, and even though our NFTY membership may not be as large as other TYGs in NAR, our presence is definitely acknowledged. Get busy with TISY!
