Thinking About Gaza by: Rabbi Eric Yoffie

Dear NFTY,

In case you missed it, last week was dedicated to ‘Israeli apartheid’. The week’s festivities showcased unfair characterizations of Israel and calls for the dismantling of the entire state, in favour of a one-state solution. As Jews on campus, it is very easy to feel isolated, attacked, and humiliated amidst efforts to destroy the Jewish character of the State of Israel.

Since 2005, Israeli Apartheid Week has held events taking place in the United States of America, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and in the Palestinian territories. Its zealous accusation of Israeli apartheid has shaken the entire peace process to its core.

It has lured people into believing the atrocious claims of Israeli apartheid and de-legitimizing Zionism in the eyes of well-intentioned, but ill-informed youth.

While it may be difficult to relate to those who choose to spread such propaganda about the State of Israel, we must also remember that they are our brothers, sisters, and fellow citizens who believe that they are fighting against oppression, injustice, and inequality.

Certainly, we can relate to these ideals. We recognize the incredible tragedy that has befallen the Palestinians and acknowledge Israel’s hand in their suffering. Without question, we support Palestinian human rights, and want an end to violence on both sides of the conflict.

At the same time though, we must confront the incredible injustice, violence, and unwillingness to negotiate peace on the part of the Palestinian and Arab leadership. At no point in the last sixty years, has Israel’s existence not been threatened by her neighbours. And Israel is the only state in the world, expected to provide humanitarian services to those committed to its destruction.

We cannot claim to know how to end this conflict, but we are certain that tit-for-tat violence and name-calling are not the answer.

Israel is not an apartheid state. Like all other states, it struggles with prejudice and inequality. However, like no other state, Israel necessarily exists as a moral contradiction: a liberal democracy, which exists primarily for the security of one people.

Don’t take our word for it though. On this page, you will find a number of resources to help you understand Israel’s unique situation for yourself, and to dispel the myth of Israeli apartheid in your home communities.

We will not tolerate inhumane acts of violence and we will not tolerate the mischaracterization of the modern State of Israel.

We call for partnership, for peace, and for the right of self-determination for both peoples.

Shalom u’Salaam,
