On Sunday, February 14, 2010 at NFTY Veida, 74 NFTYites from across North America participated in an event to benefit the organization Locks of Love.
Participants in NFTY’s Veida, which took place at the URJ Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas, were invited to grow out their hair in the months before the event:
“Until the last day of NFTY Veida, Sunday, February 14th, grow out your hair to donate to the organization Locks of Love. The hair you donate will be used to create hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children who suffer from long term medical hair loss. Boys, have no fear - you can partake as well! Grow your beards or hair out - start now or the day before! - and during the ceremony there will be an auction where participants can bid to shave your facial hair or head hair off. “
The auction raised over $500, and NFTYites donated exactly 174 inches of hair.
NFTY Veida is NFTY’s mid-year board meeting, which brings together leaders from all 19 NFTY regions to network, study, pray, share best practices, and discuss NFTY’s future. The meeting occurs every February.

What is Locks of Love?
From www.locksoflove.org
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Lock's of Love meets a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
