Making Great Flyers

Making Great Flyers

General Tips:

·         Use a computer! Neatness counts, and it’s much easier to email a word document than scanning something you do by hand.  This also gives you a great deal of flexibility if you choose to post the flyer on your synagogue’s website or on a MySpace or Facebook event page.

·         Use creative fonts and borders. No one likes to see the same old message in Times New Roman.

·         Use bright paper or colorful clip art. This will make your flyer stand out from other, boring mail (email or otherwise).

·         Make your flyers visually appealing.  In moderation, photos and clip art can be a great way to make your flyers more effective.  Be careful not to put too much on there, you still want it to look professional.

·         Explain terms like “NFTY” and “TYG.” While you understand NFTY-speak, your potential members may not.

Information You MUST Include:

Who

Who is sponsoring the event?

Who is invited to the event? (is the event open to the entire TYG or for a specific grade of students, is it a new members’ event, are other TYG’s invited?)

What

What is the event going to be? Be as specific as possible!

Where

Clearly identify location and include directions (or even a map!) if it is not at the Temple.

When

Date AND Time - be sure to always indicate when the event begins and ends

How Much

Clearly identify the cost of the event and if there is a price break for members.

If there is no cost for the event, make sure to include that as well.

Required Dress

Be sure to indicate if certain dress is required (bathing suit, Shabbat clothes, etc.)

“Need to Bring…”

Indicate if participants need to bring anything (i.e. pool toys, canned food for a charity, etc.)

RSVP Information

Deadlines and contact information (phone, address, email address)for returning event registration form and payment

Contact Information

Who can the participants contact for more information?  How is the best way to contact them?

Registration Form

Your registration form should ask for name, phone number, email and grade of the participant. It must also include the NFTY Code of Conduct along with a disclaimer releasing the synagogue from any liability with space for a parent/guardian signature.  You may want to ask if it is their first event, depending on the nature of the event.

Publicity Hints:

Where To Post Your Awesome Flyer Once It Is Finished:

·         MySpace/Facebook Event or Group (or any other online forum)

·         Email Attachment

·         TYG Bulletin Board

·         Religious School Bulletin Board

·         Synagogue Newsletter

·         Synagogue Website

·         Have religious school teachers hand out fliers in their classrooms

·         Hand them out at a NFTY event

Warning - Late publicity can only do harm!

Give yourself extra time to prepare and mail fliers, make follow-up calls, etc.

Make Your Flyers Welcoming

Everyone should feel that they are welcome at your events.

Make Your Flyers "Jewish"

Your publicity should reflect that your group is Jewish.
