The Million Quarter Project

Dear NFTYites,

Since February of 2004, NFTYites across North America have been collecting money to support Shalom Ethiopia: The Million Quarter Project.

For those of you that are not familiar with this project, Shalom Ethiopia was designed to collect a million quarters that would guarantee and complement the one meal a day provided to Ethiopian Jewish school children at the Jewish compounds in Addis Ababa and Gondar, Ethiopia. Each 25 cents collected provided an entire meal to one of 4,600 Jewish day-school children, ages 6 to 20.

Well, I am proud to say, that two years later, this past June, with the help of thousands of NFTYites and Jews in North America, Shalom Ethiopia reached its goal of collecting money for over one million meals.

For everyone that donated, even if it was just one quarter, I want to thank you so much, as I know that you have made a difference in the lives of many Jewish Ethiopian children. Thank you for helping NFTY take action!

Though this project may be over and NFTY’s goal has been reached, there are still Ethiopian Jewish children who are hungry and in need of your help. Further contributions may be sent to:

NACOEJ
132 Nassau St., Suite 412
New York, NY 10038

or find more information on www.naceoej.org.

From myself, the NFTY board, and over 4,600 Jewish Ethiopian children, todah rabah, thank you very much.

ARCHIVE: About the Million Quarter Project

What is the Million Quarter Project?

The Million Quarter Project is designed to collect a million quarters that will guarantee and complement the one meal a day provided to Ethiopian Jewish school children at the Jewish compounds in Addis Ababa and Gondar, Ethiopia. Every quarter will go directly to these Jewish children.

At the 2004 NFTY Mid-Year Board Meeting it was resolved that "all regions are encouraged to collect at least one dollar per participant at each regional event to give to Ethiopian Jewry, specifically Shalom Ethiopia: The Million Quarter Project, thus providing for meals. This will be effective immediately. At the end of the 2004-2005 NFTY Year, the decision to continue will be decided upon regionally." (Click here for the entire resolution.)

More Information

NACOEJ (National Coalition for Ethiopian Jewry) is struggling to provide one 25-cent meal per day to the 4,600 day-school children, ages 6 to 20. Many of the children told us “we are hungry all the time”. For many of these children this is their only meal of the day. They need your help to give them the energy to learn and to hope.

Choices - how will you use your quarters? What can it buy?

  • ¼ of a bag small fries
  • 1 gumball
  • 15 minutes of time on a parking meter
  • a day’s worth of food for a Jewish child in Ethiopia

What can I do to make a difference?

Shalom Ethiopia and the Million Quarter Project was created in response to the critical needs of the Jews in Ethiopia.
